Muslim Quarter, Little India, Chinatown and SEA Games?!

Singapore has so much to offer!  Beautiful architecture, organized infrastructure, simple to navigate transportation system, and the people are very nice!  Its no wonder its the most expensive city in South East Asia!

My view from the hostel room of the Sultan Mosque, built in 1824! Its currently under restoration but still is open.  They are taking Dontations to help complete the project as well.

I started my day getting up way to early and hit the town way to early as well. I quickly realized this city doesn’t wake up until around 11am.  Very few shops open their doors until after that…so you miss a lot of the excitement if you get out to soon.  Maybe because Im staying in the Muslim quarter everyone is starting out slow!😝

I found this place (Kampong Glam Cafe) and decided to eat something I have no idea what it is! Some rice, tofu and egg plate that everyone was eating for breakfast! No pancakes and orange juice here!

The Sultan Mosque is open to the public, but only Muslims are allowed into the prayer hall itself.  This is the biggest mosque our of the 70 mosques in Singapore. I met Yusuf, the caretaker of the mosque before friday prayer. He says the remodel/update being done is costing around $4.5 million, and much of the cost has been raised by visitors and the attendees.  Friday prayer was packed, I met people from all over Singapore and even a few people from Indonesia that came to visit as well.

Yusuf, get email! Im surprised you don’t have one!  And thanks for showing me around the place!

The muslim quarter is a few streets, but primarily Arab street and Haji Street.  Arab street is almost all textile and carpet shops, Haji street is the “Hip” part with restaurants and trendy small shops.  The most interesting was a coffee shop that is capitalizing on the trends of Selfies! A selfie of a selfie! Oh no, I think I broke the internet! And I found monkeys upstairs in their shop. Coffee beans, monkeys and selfies!😂 Selfie Coffee Facebook

The Marina Bay Sands – Great views of the city and you can even see Indonesia from the top on a clear day! To bad it was raining today!  How did they ever get that ship way up there?

IMG_1565 Muslim Quarter, Little India, Chinatown and SEA Games?!This is Andrew, he works at the SEA(South East Asia) games that are currently going on.  It was established to be a bi-annual multi-sports event to take place between the years when the Olympic Games and the Asian Games were held.  There was a group of people doing yoga on paddle boards when I was passing by.  Yoga is tough as it is, adding water to the mix to require better balance is tough!

Hey Andrew, the people who were behind the sailboats did not give me a shirt! They said they were out, I didn’t believe them though! I still want my SEA GAMES shirt! 🙂

For the SEA games, the organization puts on a laser show on the water.  Extremely cool idea, using water as a screen to project the images.  The show lasted about 20 minutes with 3 water screens to show images on.  The skyline of Singapore with the show was stunning.  Even with the rain it was worth it.

Finally, after walking way to far and for to long I head back.  I found this fun shop called “I am…” on Haji Street.  Its like a cafe of sorts and they have Burgers, Pizza and Desserts.  100% Muslim owned cafe and they even had donation boxes for the Mosque by the register!  Now some may think its crazy, but they put pineapple on one of their burgers, apparently its their “classic”.  Well, I tried it…and its…AMAZING!  Its like all the flavors of a great burger but adding a touch of grilled pineapple sweetness to it.😇
